COVID-19: Latest information for our on-trade customers

These are deeply challenging and uncertain time for us all, not only within the drinks industry, but across the whole country and beyond.

The safety and wellbeing of our people and everyone that we work with remains our priority and you can read about some of the measures we have taken in our blog post.

With the on-trade remaining closed, I know that many customers will have questions for us about their businesses and venues. I’ve written directly to many customers in recent days and weeks and also wanted to recap the very latest guidance from Carlsberg UK here.

Rest assured, we’re doing everything we can to work with relevant trade bodies and the government to ensure that the on-trade and brewing is considered and I will continue to share all of the latest information where we have it.

Above all, please keep safe, and when the time comes to re-open on-trade businesses, we will be ready to support you every step of the way.

Guidance on empties, ullage and full kegs

Firstly, it is worth emphasising that a key consideration for any return to normal trading in the future will be to have high quality beer, wines and spirits available to consumers. The whole industry needs to work together, with government colleagues, to make progress towards that outcome. Part of that is the return of empties and kegs in cellars. We can assure you that we are working hard to find solutions that will work for you with regards to the removal and replenishment of kegged product.

For now, we would urge you to observe the following:

  • Contrary to advice circulating in some of the trade press, please do not currently destroy or dispose of any beer kept at outlet until further notice
  • As we have previously communicated, Carlsberg UK will (CUK) credit any unopened kegs of CUK product that go out of date to your account in full. We are working through how best to manage the process of un-broached full kegged product and we will communicate this to you as soon as we are in a position to be able to.
  • We continue to work with our Third-Party Brand owners on their own returns policies and we will communicate their approach to crediting back any out of date stock in due course, after we have received their own policy in this regard
  • We are currently exploring the best options with which to dispose of broached kegs and working with industry bodies and HMRC to explore ways to ensure any duty element may be retrieved. As such at this point, we would ask you not to do anything regards destruction / disposal at outlet. The health and safety, and environmental impact of any disposal must be a priority for us all at this time.
  • Any small pack product (wines, spirits, minerals and packaged beer) will have a longer shelf life and as such we will not be offering sale or return on this stock. This can be continued to be sold for at home consumption should you wish, or alternatively this can be stored until a future point at which your outlet is able to resume normal trading

Effective close down of lines

Please find outlined below the processes to protect dispense equipment while the enforced closure is in place.  This is a result of all members of the Brand Dispense Association (BDA) coming together and sharing best practice. We have collectively agreed that if the procedures attached are adhered to, this gives us the best chance of minimising any potential equipment damage when the outlets are re-opened.

Dependent on the dispense system in place please use the appropriate attachment:

Given at this point we are unsure of the length of the government restrictions we would recommend the use of Guardian Beer Line Protector which can be ordered directly from the manufacturer, Proton:
