Carlsberg UK’s 2019 Sustainability Report, launched today, outlines the brewer’s performance against its ambitious global sustainability plan, Together Towards ZERO.

In 2019, the brewer reports:

  • 4.5% reduction in absolute CO2 emissions through targeted programmes to improve the efficiency of the Northampton brewery.
  • 3.6% reduction in absolute water use, saving the equivalent of 18 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
  • Roll out of Snap Pack, removing the plastic rings from small packs of cans, with plans to extend this across the portfolio.
  • First alcohol-free beer on draught  Brooklyn Special Effects – increasing the visibility and availability of alcohol-free options.
  • Developments in sustainable packaging, including lightweighting of glass bottles across the Carlsberg portfolio, and trial of 100% recycled content shrink.
  • 65% reduction in days lost rateand a 46% increase in hazard reporting, towards a zero accidents culture.

The report focuses on the calendar year 2019, but in his opening letter, Tomasz Blawat, Managing Director, recognises the impact of COVID-19 and the impact that has been felt across the world.

“Challenges like this can bring out the best in organisations and individuals and we’ve seen countless examples of collaboration and innovation, ranging from producing hand sanitisers to creating a tool to support local pubs to take their offer online. In the wake of this crisis, consumers around the world are likely to be even more aware of our responsibilities towards the environment and begin making more sustainable choices.

The next decade is crucial. And the work we’ve seen so far is proof that together, we can overcome the challenges ahead so that our business contributes to a better today, and tomorrow.”
