Carlsberg beer lands on British shores for the first time. J.C. Jacobsen sends a small sample to Scotland, 21 years after founding the Carlsberg brewery in Copenhagen.

The 50s mark a monumental shift in the British beer market. Until now, ale had dominated the bar. But with drinkers rapidly developing a taste for Carlsberg lager, the UK soon becomes the brewer’s most important export market.

Brewing starts at the new Carlsberg brewery in Northampton. Inspired by a Danish longship, the building is the vision of Danish architect Knud Munk, for which he receives the prestigious Financial Times’ Industrial Architecture Prize.

Carlsberg and Allied-Lyons – owners of Tetley’s ale – merge brewing activities as Carlsberg-Tetley.

1997

Carlsberg Group assumes total ownership of Carlsberg-Tetley.

2004

The British branch of Carlsberg becomes known as Carlsberg UK.

2008

Announcement of the closure of Tetley Brewery in Leeds, to take place in 2011.

As part of plans to become more agile as a business, Carlsberg UK tightens its focus on brewing and selling premium quality beer brands. Flagship brand Carlsberg Export gets a makeover inspired by the brand’s Danish roots.

Also, New York’s famous Brooklyn Brewery and gluten-free organic Czech pilsner CELIA add to Carlsberg UK’s growing portfolio of craft brands, while the brewer introduces a step-change in the availability of quality draught beer with the innovative DraughtMaster™ system.
