Over the last few weeks, we've been brewing even more of our perfectly balanced Danish Pilsner just in time for the potential re-opening of UK pubs in early July. However, we aren't just planning to make beer lovers happy, as our ambition to reduce our waste means that the additional yeast that comes from the increased brewing is helping to save the apparent Marmite shortage too – something for all Marmite fans to shout about.
This year alone, 87% of the yeast from Carlsberg UK’s brewing at our Northampton brewery, has supplied Marmite, with an increase from the beginning of the year (46% in March, 79% in April and 112% in May) as the demand for the spread surged during lockdown due to more home cooking.
The food spread isn’t the only item that has been in short supply during lockdown, as Brits stashed other cupboard staples including flour and pasta. However, as a firm favourite in many British households, we're working hard to bring Marmite back to the homes (and hearts) of the nation.
The increase in brewing also comes as Brits eagerly await the announcement that pubs will be re-opening for the summer. For many this will be a welcome treat after months in lockdown and so we're looking to the future to ensure that when it is safe to reopen, beer drinkers will be able to enjoy a beer in a pub garden again.
In the meantime, we'll continue to brew beer, in the hope that Brits can soon safely raise a glass (and a Marmite jar) in the near future.
